The district of Luynes

The district of Luynes is an integral part of the municipality of Aix-en-Provence. It takes its name from the homonymous river that serves its citadel. Many of the sites of the time were discovered in the village. Most of them revealed the presence of the Gauls and Romans on the territory.

In 1988, in Blaque, ceramic, amphoric and sigillated materials have been noticed in its surrounding areas notifying the existence of a people of the time of the High Empire in I and III century. At the end of the 16th century, the district of Luynes is evoked as a "small modest farm" located at the entrance of Aix-en-Provence.

The village hosts several teaching institutes of all levels ranging from elementary school to large academic institutions. The oldest of all is the school "International Bilingual School of Provence" or I.B.S of Provence, founded in 1984.

One of the most important places that you should not miss during a visit to the district of Luynes is the National Necropolis with 11,424 soldiers who have been killed during the two world wars since 1966. This military cemetery is located in the heart of the citadel from Luynes to Aix-en-Provence.

This small French quarter is mainly known for its carefully elaborated prison holding temporary convicted people, a particular penitentiary community, including minors, DPS and prisoners with low sentence remainder.

The prison received more than 600 prisoners in 2010, the equivalent of an occupancy rate of 125%. A workshop of 1,200 m2 allows 80 prisoners to carry out work related to shaping and packaging.

The prisoners also have the chance to take a training courses during 3 to 6 months, however, 180 people can only join the courses. A huge library of 60 m2 with more than 4000 books is accessible to all the inmates.
